Dallas Mavericks Secure P.J. Washington with Four-Year Extension Amid Championship Aspirations

Mavericks Lock in P.J. Washington
The Dallas Mavericks are solidifying their future by agreeing to a new four-year, $90 million extension with forward P.J. Washington, as confirmed by his agent Kevin Bradbury. This deal ensures that Washington will be with the Mavericks through the 2029-30 season, a key move for a franchise looking to compete in the competitive Western Conference.
Washington's contract extension comes shortly after the Mavs' successful campaign during the 2023-24 season, where he played a vital role as the team reached the NBA Finals. He averaged 13.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game during the playoffs and further enhanced his performance in the regular season, contributing 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game, shooting 45.3 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from beyond the arc.
His ability to stretch the floor makes him a difficult matchup for opposing defenses, allowing star players such as Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving more room to operate. Additionally, Washington is recognized for his defensive versatility, capable of guarding multiple positions and also excelling at rim protection. Statistics from NBA.com indicate that opponents shot 2.7 percent worse than their usual averages within six feet of the basket when he defended them during the 2024-25 season.
Despite questions surrounding his role following the Mavericks’ selection of Cooper Flagg as the No. 1 pick in the draft, Washington remains a crucial component of the Mavericks' roster. His experience and playmaking abilities provide essential depth and injury insurance, solidifying a core aiming for championship contention in the coming years.
