Dallas Stars Advance to Face Edmonton Oilers in Western Conference Finals

The Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers are set to square off in the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive season. In a thrilling conclusion to their previous series, Thomas Harley netted an overtime goal on Saturday night, securing a series-clinching 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 6 of the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs. As a result, the Stars will advance to face the Oilers, with a coveted spot in the Stanley Cup Final at stake.
The outcome of the Eastern Conference Finals remains uncertain, as the opponent for the Carolina Hurricanes has yet to be determined. Looking ahead, the upcoming playoff schedule features the Florida Panthers visiting the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday, May 18, with the series tied at 3-3.
Saturday's game began on a frustrating note for the Stars, as Tyler Seguin was unable to capitalize on a clear scoring opportunity midway through the first period. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck, a candidate for the Vezina Trophy, thwarted a barrage of shots from the Stars, leaving the first period scoreless. In the second period, Mark Scheifele broke the deadlock for the Jets with his inaugural road goal of the playoffs, despite the recent passing of his father, Brad. Jets head coach Scott Arniel indicated that Scheifele was determined to play in Game 6, believing it was what his father would have wanted. The Stars responded six minutes later when Sam Steel scored his first postseason goal to even the score. As the third period commenced, Hellebuyck continued to impress with a remarkable save against Mikko Rantanen. Meanwhile, Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger produced a save worthy of accolades, diving to deny Mason Appleton in a crucial moment. With just 14.8 seconds remaining in regulation, Steel drew a penalty, granting the Stars a power-play opportunity to start overtime. Harley seized this chance, launching a shot from the slot that found the back of the net just 1:33 into the extra period. The Jets faced the loss without defenseman Josh Morrissey, who exited after a collision with Rantanen in the second period. The Stars have now reached their third consecutive conference final without yet contending for the Stanley Cup, and they will hope that the addition of Rantanen at the trade deadline will help alter this trend in their rematch against the Oilers.
