Cleveland Browns Eye Coaching Changes: Kevin Stefanski's Future in Jeopardy

Browns Weigh Head Coach Changes Amid Disappointing Season
The Cleveland Browns are reportedly considering moving on from head coach Kevin Stefanski as they approach the offseason, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. With the team holding a dismal 4-12 record, the future of the 6th-year coach is increasingly uncertain.
On Tuesday, Fowler noted that both the Browns and the Las Vegas Raiders are in the early stages of exploring potential coaching changes. "Doesn't mean they're locked in to doing it, or that they've decided yet, but those are certainly on my radar," he stated, emphasizing the ongoing deliberation within the organization.
Stefanski's Struggles Amid Roster Changes
This news follows reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, who indicated that the Browns have yet to finalize decisions about Stefanski's future. Despite criticism, the Browns recognize Stefanski’s capabilities as a head coach, appreciating his consistent approach despite a tumultuous season characterized by a transitioning roster.
Notably, Stefanski, along with general manager Andrew Berry, was awarded contract extensions prior to the 2024 season. Ownership praised both for aiding the Browns' playoff run in 2023, despite the challenges posed by injuries and a rotating quarterback situation. However, since receiving those extensions, the Browns have faced a tough stretch, amassing only a 7-26 record due to ongoing instability at the quarterback position, including the limited availability of Deshaun Watson and recent experiments with rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
Future at Stake in Upcoming Game
Stefanski, who has achieved recognition as NFL Coach of the Year in both 2020 and 2023, has maintained a focus on the present, emphasizing his commitment to the team amid speculation regarding his job security. When asked about returning next season, he highlighted, "As you can imagine, my sole focus is on this game versus Cincinnati. But I also would tell you I'm privileged to have this job."
As the season finale against the Bengals approaches, the performance of rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who has received credit for leading the Browns to an upset victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 17, may play a crucial role in Stefanski’s future. With Sanders preparing for his seventh start, how he leads the team could significantly impact both his own trajectory and that of Stefanski moving forward.
