Cleveland Browns' Coach Explains QB Change in Preseason Finale Against Rams

Understanding the Sideline Exchange Between Stefanski and Sanders
In a tense moment during the Cleveland Browns' 19-17 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, head coach Kevin Stefanski and rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders had a notable sideline exchange as Sanders was pulled from the game with just two minutes remaining. After the game, Stefanski addressed the media to clarify his decision, emphasizing the team's offensive struggles in the second half.
“Obviously we didn't play great as an offense in the second half, that's never on one person. So we can be better in a bunch of areas,” Stefanski commented. He noted his decision to give backup quarterback Snoop Huntley a chance for a final drive in the closing moments.
Sanders' Performance Highlights
Sanders faced challenges during the game, completing only 3 of 6 passes for a mere 14 yards and suffering five sacks. He managed to lead the Browns through five second-half drives; however, none converted into points. The Rams took a late 17-16 lead with just over two minutes left after a touchdown from Jordan Waters.
After Sanders' exit, Huntley took the reins, showcasing his skills on a crucial six-play, 46-yard drive that culminated in Andre Szmyt's game-winning 37-yard field goal, aided by several penalties that benefited the Browns.
Rookie Outlook
Shedeur Sanders, who was a fifth-round pick in the NFL draft, was viewed as a potential first-rounder by many analysts leading up to the draft. He is currently positioned as the fourth quarterback on the Browns' depth chart, behind starter Joe Flacco, veteran Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel, the team’s third-round selection.
Despite his rocky performance against the Rams, Sanders expressed optimism about his training camp experience, stating, “Camp was great and a learning experience.” He previously impressed during his preseason debut, completing 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. While his last outing was disappointing, Sanders has shown promise as he navigates the learning curve of his rookie season.
