Joe Burrow’s Injury Woes Continue
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will undergo surgery for a turf toe injury, as confirmed by head coach Zac Taylor on Monday. While Taylor did not provide a specific timetable for Burrow's return, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the star quarterback could be sidelined for at least three months.
Burrow sustained the injury during Sunday’s nail-biting 31-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The injury occurred midway through the second quarter when the Bengals' trainers rushed to his aid. He required assistance to return to the locker room and was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Despite Burrow's absence, the Bengals displayed resilience, rallying with a last-minute touchdown orchestrated by backup quarterback Jake Browning, ensuring a thrilling win.
A Career Defined by Injuries
Joe Burrow's NFL journey has been marked by significant highs and lows, predominantly stemming from injuries. His promising rookie season in 2020 was cut short after just 10 games due to a devastating torn ACL and MCL, preventing him from potentially earning Rookie of the Year honors.
In 2023, Burrow's injury saga continued as he dealt with a calf strain in late July, which kept him from training camp and the preseason. Although he managed to rally the Bengals to a four-game win streak following a slow 1-3 start, his season took another hit with a torn ligament in his right wrist sustained during a Week 11 loss against the Baltimore Ravens.
Burrow's absence was felt as the Bengals finished 4-3 without him in the latter part of the season but ultimately missed the playoffs. The 2023 season saw Burrow excelling as a top-tier quarterback, showcasing his talents as a two-time Pro Bowler and leading the Bengals to two AFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance in 2021. In September 2023, the team reinforced their commitment to him by signing Burrow to a staggering five-year, $275 million extension.
While Burrow managed to play a full season in 2024, throwing for 4,918 yards, 43 touchdowns, and nine interceptions, the Bengals ended up with a 9-8 record and again missed postseason play. The persistent concern remains that several seasons in Burrow's career have been disrupted by injury.
Backup Jake Browning has shown to be a solid alternative, but it is clear that the Bengals are significantly less potent without their star quarterback. Keeping Burrow healthy is crucial for Cincinnati as they aim for their first championship title.
Moving forward, Browning will have the crucial task of sustaining the team in Burrow's absence.
