Brooklyn Nets Seek Greater Value for Cameron Johnson
The Brooklyn Nets are reportedly seeking a more substantial return for small forward Cameron Johnson than the six second-round picks obtained in trades involving Dennis Schröder and Dorian Finney-Smith with the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers, according to NBA insiders with Moneyline.
Cameron Johnson, who is 28 years old, fulfills important criteria for teams aiming for playoff contention; however, his $4.5 million in unlikely bonuses poses a challenge for organizations constrained by the salary cap. A potential trade scenario involving the Golden State Warriors would require the inclusion of Gary Payton II, Kevon Looney, Brandin Podziemski, and a top-eight protected first-round pick in 2026 to match salaries. Unfortunately, due to the bonuses impacting the salary apron, such a trade is not permissible under current rules.
The Nets' prior trades have shaped how they evaluate Johnson's value in the market. The team previously acquired D'Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis, and three second-round picks from the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Finney-Smith and Shake Milton. Additionally, they dealt Dennis Schröder along with a second-round pick to the Golden State Warriors, receiving De'Anthony Melton, Reece Beekman, and three more second-round picks in return. Despite these complexities, Johnson continues to attract interest from various teams, including the Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, and Sacramento Kings. As the trade deadline on February 6 approaches, reports indicate that the Nets are seeking multiple first-round picks for Johnson, suggesting an increase in his trade value.
