The Boston Bruins are reportedly in discussions regarding a potential three-year contract extension for captain Brad Marchand, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. However, Marchand himself has publicly refuted this claim, indicating that the information is inaccurate 'for now.' He further emphasized his position to reporters, stating, 'If I was to sign a three-year extension, it would be signed, you know? Clearly, Elliotte is just wrong there.'
Currently, Marchand is in the last season of an eight-year contract worth $49 million, which he signed with the Bruins in 2016. A new extension would allow Marchand to remain with the team and prevent him from entering unrestricted free agency next summer. Should an extension materialize, it would enable Marchand to continue his tenure with the Bruins through the 2027-28 season. Marchand, who has been with the Bruins throughout his entire 16-season NHL career, has taken on a significant leadership role following the retirement of Patrice Bergeron in July 2023. As captain, Marchand has contributed four assists in the first seven games of the 2024-25 season, in which the Bruins currently hold a record of 3-4-1.
Last season, Marchand achieved considerable success, netting 29 goals and 67 points over 82 games, guiding the Bruins to their eighth consecutive playoff appearance. The team's playoff run concluded in the second round, following a loss to the eventual champion Florida Panthers. To enhance their competitiveness this season, the Bruins secured starting goaltender Jeremy Swayman on an eight-year, $66 million extension, with hopes of a deeper playoff run despite a slow start. The potential extension of Marchand could alleviate trade pressures at the deadline as the team aims for stability. Initially concerning was a recent incident in which Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery appeared visibly frustrated with Marchand during an overtime loss to the Utah Hockey Club on October 19. In response, Marchand defended Montgomery, expressing confidence in the coach's leadership. Marchand ranks fifth among all Bruins players in games played, with a total of 1,037. In terms of career accomplishments, he has recorded 401 goals and 933 points, holding the franchise record for postseason goals with 56, while being second to Hall of Famer Ray Bourque with 138 playoff points in 157 games. Notably, Marchand remains the last active player from the 2011 Stanley Cup-winning team.
