Ben Johnsons Coaching Future: A Potential Move from Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has been frequently mentioned in discussions regarding head coaching opportunities, and there are indications that he may be ready to take such a step this offseason. Sports analyst Albert Breer noted that Johnson appears to be 'much more ready to take a job now than he was the past couple of years.' As the Lions concluded their playoff run, following an unexpected defeat against the Washington Commanders in the Divisional round, speculation surrounding Johnson's future intensified.

The Lions, who secured a first-round bye after finishing the regular season as the No. 1 seed in the NFC, faced an early postseason exit. This outcome allows both Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, both of whom have been at the center of head coaching rumors, to seriously contemplate opportunities beyond Detroit. CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reported that Tom Brady, the minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, has been actively pursuing Johnson for the head coaching role previously held by Antonio Pierce. Following the Lions' playoff setback, Jones emphasized that the Raiders 'are going to make a big push in the coming days' to secure Johnson's services.

ESPN's Adam Schefter added that the Raiders have begun interviewing former Lions executive Lance Newmark for their vacant general manager position. Newmark is reported to have a strong relationship with both Johnson and Glenn, which Breer highlighted as significant regarding Johnson's potential interest in the Raiders. Additionally, Johnson's decision-making process may reflect a preference for alignment with a front office, as noted by NBC Sports' Mike Florio. Meanwhile, as the Jacksonville Jaguars have retained general manager Trent Baalke after dismissing head coach Doug Pederson, speculation persists that Baalke could depart if Johnson is hired. Throughout the season, Johnson has also been linked to the head coaching vacancy in Chicago, although the Bears have retained general manager Ryan Poles. The potential decisions of the Raiders and Jaguars surrounding their front office could greatly influence Johnson's choice, impacting the broader 2025 hiring landscape for head coaches and general managers.
