Astros General Manager Discusses Free-Agent Situation with Alex Bregman
Houston Astros General Manager Dana Brown has indicated that negotiations with free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman have reached a standstill, prompting the organization to explore alternative options. According to Brown, the Astros made a competitive offer aimed at retaining Bregman, but the discussions were not progressing as hoped, leading the team to consider other avenues.
In a recent trade, the Astros sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs, acquiring third baseman Isaac Paredes in return. The team also secured first baseman Christian Walker with a three-year contract valued at $60 million. Both Paredes and Walker are expected to occupy starting infield positions in the upcoming 2025 season, significantly diminishing the chances of Bregman's return to Houston. Brown confirmed the team's plans, stating, 'Paredes is going to play third and Walker is going to play first.'
While the Astros appeared to chase other options, including St. Louis Cardinals star Nolan Arenado, attempts to facilitate a trade fell through as Arenado declined to waive his no-trade clause. Bregman, who has devoted the first nine years of his professional career to the Astros, has made two All-Star appearances and has contributed to two World Series championships. He currently ranks sixth on the Astros' all-time home runs leaderboard and ninth in RBIs. Despite a challenging season in 2024, where he posted a batting average of .260 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs, Bregman is expected to garner interest from multiple teams during free agency, including the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Toronto Blue Jays.
