Arizona Diamondbacks Acquire Josh Naylor from Cleveland Guardians
The Arizona Diamondbacks have officially acquired first baseman Josh Naylor from the Cleveland Guardians, as announced by the team on Saturday. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the trade details have been unveiled, confirming that Arizona will receive Naylor in exchange for right-handed pitcher Slade Cecconi and a competitive balance Round B draft pick.
Naylor concluded the previous season with a .243 batting average, alongside 31 home runs and 108 RBIs, contributing to the Guardians' impressive 92-69 record. His performance last year marked a personal best in multiple offensive categories, showcasing his development throughout his five seasons with the Guardians after beginning his career with the San Diego Padres in 2019. During the Guardians' postseason journey, which came to an end following a 4-1 defeat to the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, Naylor recorded two runs, nine hits, and five RBIs, boasting a batting average of .225.
The acquisition of Naylor follows the recent departure of former Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker, who signed a three-year, $60 million contract with the Houston Astros. This move has created a notable gap in Arizona's infield, given Walker's substantial contribution to the team's success; he hit 26 home runs and accounted for 84 RBIs with a .251 batting average during Arizona's 89-73 campaign last season. Naylor is expected to play a pivotal role as the Diamondbacks strive to return to the World Series following their appearance in 2023.
