New York Yankees Trade Jose Trevino to Cincinnati Reds
The New York Yankees have executed a trade, sending catcher Jose Trevino to the Cincinnati Reds. According to reports from Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees received right-handed relief pitcher Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson in return for Trevino. The transaction was confirmed by the Yankees shortly after the initial report, highlighting the team's ongoing adjustments to their roster.
In the 2024 season, Trevino primarily acted as the backup catcher for the Yankees, achieving a batting average of .215 alongside eight home runs and 28 RBIs over the course of 73 games. Known for his defensive prowess, Trevino garnered Platinum Glove honors in addition to being selected for a Gold Glove in 2022. That same year, he also made an All-Star appearance, contributing 11 home runs and 43 RBIs to the Yankees' campaign. However, his 2023 season was hindered by wrist surgery, leading to Austin Wells taking his position in the 2024 lineup. Wells posted a commendable performance, finishing third in the American League Rookie of the Year voting, indicating his potential as a key asset for the Yankees in the future. Trevino is currently in the final year of team control on his contract before entering free agency after the 2025 season.
Cruz, who has made 69 appearances for the Reds in the 2024 season, recorded a 4.86 ERA and a 1.335 WHIP. Despite these statistics, the 34-year-old has demonstrated an ability to induce strikeouts, averaging 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings. Over 66.2 innings pitched in 2024, Cruz managed to strike out 109 hitters while issuing 35 walks. Meanwhile, Jackson, who spent the past season with the Tampa Bay Rays, has struggled offensively, holding a career OPS of .456. He is anticipated to assume Trevino's depth role behind Wells. The Yankees have remained active on the trade front, having recently acquired Cody Bellinger from the Chicago Cubs, further signifying their trading strategy as they navigate the season.
