Anthony Richardson Faces Injury Setback as Colts Seek QB Stability

Injury Update on Anthony Richardson
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is once again in the spotlight following a dislocated pinkie finger that sidelined him during the team's first preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens. Head coach Shane Steichen confirmed the injury occurred during the first quarter, after a sack by an unblocked Ravens defender, and noted that Richardson's return timetable remains uncertain.
Quarterback Competition Heats Up
With Richardson out of action, Daniel Jones stepped in to take the reins for the Colts. This marks another chapter in Richardson's challenging journey as he has dealt with a series of injuries throughout his first two NFL seasons. Last year, a concussion and an AC joint sprain in his shoulder limited him to just four games, ultimately requiring surgery on his right shoulder.
Previous Seasons and Current Challenges
Starting 2024 with a promise of better health, Richardson's aspirations hit another roadblock when an oblique injury forced him to miss several games. After his return, he was briefly benched in favor of veteran Joe Flacco but managed to reclaim his starting position. Over the season, he played 11 games, posting 1,814 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and twelve interceptions. His offseason was marred by further complications, including a shoulder issue that caused him to miss minicamp, similar to his rookie struggles.
The Road Ahead
Now, with the addition of Jones—who was signed in March—Richardson finds himself in a competition for the starting quarterback spot. Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon expressed confidence in Richardson's potential, stating, "He still has time to prove it. Bring a sense of urgency. And nothing brings a sense of urgency more than competition." As the Colts look to establish a reliable quarterback, Richardson's primary focus will be on maintaining his health to seize the opportunity to lead the team.
