Alvin Kamara Voices Support for Darren Rizzi as Saints Seek New Head Coach
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara expressed his support for Darren Rizzi as a potential head coach for the team this week. In a post on X, Kamara noted that his choice for the Saints' head coach 'rhyme wit Fizzi.' Despite his claim not to be extensively versed in football, Kamara added humorously that the conversations around coaching jobs often amuse him, particularly the perspectives shared by those who may not have played organized sports recently.
Rizzi, who has served as the Saints' special teams coordinator since 2019 and was promoted to assistant head coach in 2022, took over as the interim head coach after the dismissal of Dennis Allen in November. During his eight-game tenure as interim head coach, Rizzi recorded a 3-5 record, marking an improvement over the Saints' earlier 2-7 start. In addition to Rizzi, New Orleans has been exploring multiple candidates, including former NFL head coaches such as Mike McCarthy, who is set to have an in-person interview as reported by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.
As reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Saints are also arranging in-person interviews with several coordinators, including Aaron Glenn from the Detroit Lions, Mike Kafka from the New York Giants, and Anthony Weaver from the Miami Dolphins. However, these interviews were postponed due to severe winter weather conditions affecting New Orleans. Rizzi, 54, has not held a full-time head coaching position in the NFL, but he has experience in coaching roles at the collegiate level, where he led New Haven and Rhode Island. Since joining the Saints, the team has experienced playoff success in Rizzi’s early tenure, but they are currently facing a four-year postseason drought. The Saints finished the 2024 season with a disappointing 5-12 record, and the next head coach will face significant challenges ahead, particularly in ensuring that key offensive players such as Derek Carr, Chris Olave, and Rashid Shaheed remain healthy, as injuries severely impacted the team's performance following a promising 2-0 start.
