Alvin Kamara Voices Support for Darren Rizzi as Saints Head Coach
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has recently displayed his endorsement for Darren Rizzi to become the team's next head coach. In a social media post on X, Kamara hinted at his preference, suggesting that his choice for a new head coach 'rhymes with Fizzi.' The comment alludes to Rizzi, who has been with the Saints in various capacities since 2019, including his roles as special teams coordinator and assistant head coach.
Following the dismissal of Dennis Allen in November, Rizzi stepped in as the interim head coach and led the team through eight games, achieving a record of 3-5. This mark represented an improvement over the Saints' challenging 2-7 start to the season. The franchise has also been considering several other candidates for the head coaching position, including former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who was reported to be in line for an in-person interview with the Saints this week.
In addition to McCarthy, the Saints are reportedly scheduled to interview Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, although some of these discussions have been postponed due to adverse weather conditions in New Orleans. At 54 years old, Rizzi has not held a full-time head coaching position in the NFL; however, he does bring collegiate coaching experience. He led the Division II New Haven program to a 15-14 record from 1999 to 2001 and had a brief stint as head coach at FCS Rhode Island, where he finished with a 3-9 record in 2008. He joined the Saints organization after a notable tenure with the Miami Dolphins, contributing significantly to the team's special teams units and the organization's overall success. The Saints have experienced playoff appearances during Rizzi's time with the team but are currently navigating a four-year postseason drought following a disappointing 5-12 record in 2024.
