Alvin Kamara Supports Darren Rizzi for Saints Head Coaching Role
New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara has publicly expressed his support for Darren Rizzi to be named the team's next head coach. In a post on X, Kamara referenced his pick for the head coaching position with a playful comment, indicating that it 'rhyme wit Fizzi.' While he acknowledged that he does not often discuss football during the offseason, he found it amusing to hear various opinions on why certain coaches should be considered for roles.
Darren Rizzi has served as the Saints' special teams coordinator since 2019 and took on the role of assistant head coach in 2022. Following the dismissal of Dennis Allen in November, Rizzi was named the interim head coach, where he concluded the season with a 3-5 record over eight games. This performance marked an improvement over the team's 2-7 start to the season, demonstrating Rizzi's potential to lead the team moving forward.
In addition to Rizzi, the Saints are reportedly considering a range of candidates for the head coaching position. Notable names include former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who is scheduled for an in-person interview. Other candidates include Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, although the latter interviews have been postponed due to severe winter weather in New Orleans. With an underwhelming 5-12 record in 2024, their worst since a 3-13 finish in 2005, the new head coach will have significant challenges ahead. Kamara's role in the offense will be crucial for whoever takes the position, particularly if key players like quarterback Derek Carr and wide receivers Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed can maintain their health.
