Yankees Eyeing Second Basemen Ahead of 2025 Season
As the New York Yankees prepare for the 2025 season, the team has already made significant additions to its roster, including players like Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt. The next area of focus appears to be solidifying the second base position, a role previously held by Gleyber Torres, who departed the Yankees to sign a one-year, $15 million contract with the Detroit Tigers.
According to reports from Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Yankees have engaged in discussions with the San Diego Padres regarding a potential trade for Luis Arráez, a three-time All-Star. Additionally, they have inquired about Gavin Lux from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Arráez, whose name has circulated in trade conversations throughout the offseason, is set to earn $13.7 million in the final year of his current contract after recording impressive statistics of .314/.346/.392 across 150 games split between the Padres and Miami Marlins in the previous season.
In light of the Dodgers' recent acquisition of Hyeseong Kim for $12.5 million over three years, Lux may find himself in an increasingly competitive infield situation. With two years of team control remaining before reaching free agency after the 2026 season, Lux is projected to earn $2.8 million in the upcoming year. The infielder concluded the 2024 season with a batting line of .251/.320/.383 across 139 games. Notably, Yankees second basemen collectively batted .257/.330/.377, contributing 16 home runs and 67 RBIs in the last season.
