Trade Talks Heat Up Between Mets and Padres, Stars Lindor and Tatis Remain Untouched

New Trade Discussions Between Mets and Padres
The New York Mets and San Diego Padres are currently engaged in trade discussions, but notable stars Francisco Lindor and Fernando Tatis Jr. are notably absent from these negotiations. According to reports from Ken Rosenthal, Dennis Lin, and Will Sammon of The Athletic, both teams are exploring potential trades that could reshape their rosters.
Reported Targets and Prospects
The Padres have broached the idea of trading pitcher Nick Pivetta and outfielder Ramón Laureano, along with relievers Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, and Jeremiah Estrada. On the flip side, San Diego has expressed interest in acquiring young major leaguers and the Mets' top prospects. Despite ongoing speculation regarding Tatis’ long-term future in San Diego, it appears that a blockbuster trade to New York is not currently planned.
Mets' Pitching Needs
Among the targets mentioned, Mason Miller could be a more realistic acquisition for the Mets. The talented reliever posted an impressive 2.63 ERA over 60 combined games for both the Athletics and Padres last season, showcasing his potential with an average of 15.2 strikeouts per nine innings.
Roster Changes and Future Outlook
The Mets have recently undergone significant roster changes, losing closer Edwin Díaz to free agency with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but bringing in Devin Williams on a three-year contract worth $45 million. Additionally, the roster is projected to look markedly different by 2026, with notable players like Pete Alonso signing with the Baltimore Orioles and Brandon Nimmo being traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Marcus Semien. Furthermore, the Mets added Jorge Polanco as a free agent with a two-year, $40 million deal.
Strong Performances in 2025
Both Lindor and Tatis had strong seasons in 2025, which makes their retention even more compelling for both franchises. Lindor concluded the season hitting .267 with 31 home runs, 31 stolen bases, 35 doubles, and 86 RBI, leading to an .811 OPS. Meanwhile, Tatis recorded 25 home runs and 32 steals, alongside a solid .268/.368/.446 slash line.
