Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks Eye Dallas Mavericks' Anthony Davis Ahead of Trade Deadline

Interest Grows in Anthony Davis Trade
The Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks are reportedly leading the charge in pursuing a trade for Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. The trade interest comes as teams look to strengthen their rosters ahead of the Feb. 5 trade deadline.
Mavs Hold High Expectations
Stein expresses caution regarding the Hawks' ability to present a trade package that would entice Dallas, mentioning that optimism around that potential deal is low. Meanwhile, the Raptors' aggressiveness in pursuing Davis will depend heavily on their standing in the Eastern Conference as the trade deadline approaches.
Stein highlights that the Mavericks have set a high price for Davis, emphasizing that their primary goal isn't merely to offload his contract, which mirrors that of Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo. They are keen on netting a significant return if they do decide to part with the centerpiece of their Luka Dončić trade from last February.
Market Challenges
Complicating matters is the general perception of Davis's market value, which appears to be less favorable than expected for a 10-time All-Star. His hefty salary of $54.1 million adds another layer of complexity to potential trades. For instance, a deal with the Hawks would necessitate including star players such as Trae Young or Kristaps Porziņģis, but with Kyrie Irving on the Mavericks roster, Young's inclusion might not be essential.
Additionally, Porziņģis is seen as insufficient to make a significant difference due to his injury history, causing further uncertainty around trade negotiations.
Raptors’ Situation
Similar to Atlanta, the Raptors face challenges in identifying a tradeable asset that would benefit Dallas. Stein mentions that Toronto is eager to retain veteran center Jakob Poeltl, particularly following the season-ending injury to Dereck Lively II, which could make Poeltl a viable option for the Mavericks.
Dallas Mavericks' Playoff Picture
Currently holding a 10-17 record, the Mavericks sit at 12th in the Western Conference, just one game behind the Utah Jazz for the final play-in spot. As the playoffs grow nearer, Dallas's stance on trading Davis may evolve, particularly if their position in the standings worsens.
