The anticipation is building for the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship as Sweden prepares to take on Czechia in the gold-medal game at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, this Monday. Meanwhile, Finland and Canada will vie for third place on the same day.
Semifinal Highlights
Sunday's semifinals showcased intense matchups that kept fans on the edge of their seats. In the first game, Sweden triumphed over Finland with a thrilling 4-3 victory that culminated in a nail-biting shootout.
Sweden kicked off the scoring just seconds into the match, but by the end of the first period, the scoreboard read even. The two teams exchanged goals early in the second period, leading to a critical moment when Eddie Genborg, drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, scored to give Sweden a 3-2 lead. As the third period progressed, Joona Saarelainen of Finland, a Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick, leveled the score at 3-3, pushing the game into a shootout.
In the decisive shootout, after both teams scored once, Sweden's Anton Frondell, selected by the Chicago Blackhawks, secured the win with a stunning shot. Frondell described the moment, saying, “I blacked out. It was an amazing feeling. Third time. I had three tries, so happy the last one went in.”
In the second semifinal, Czechia defeated Canada with a score of 6-4 in another high-stakes battle. The first period saw limited scoring until Canada broke the ice. Czechia quickly equalized and took a 2-1 lead early in the second. Canada’s Zayne Parekh, with five goals in the tournament, tied it up later in the period, but Czechia responded to take the lead again.
The tension heightened in the third period as Canada tied the score once more, but Czechia's Vojtěch Čihař struck to regain the lead with just over 10 minutes left. In a dramatic finale, Canada managed to tie the game again, only for Czechia to seal the win with an empty-net goal in the last minute, securing their spot in the championship game.
