Stephen Curry Reflects on Three-Point Shooting Evolution in the NBA

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry recently shared his perspective on the impact of increased three-point shooting in the NBA during an appearance on ESPN's NBA Today. Curry acknowledged the shift in the league's dynamics, stating, "I don't think you want me to answer that question because it's now the talk of the talk of how everybody shooting threes." He expressed his personal enjoyment of the trend, highlighting the variety in three-point shooting techniques and the creativity involved in creating these opportunities. Curry noted, "It's new, and a lot of people have a little different viewpoint on it, but for me, like, it is cool to kind of have seen the evolution of it."
The 10-time All-Star also addressed the ongoing criticism from some commentators regarding teams' reliance on long-range shots. He remarked, "I mean, everybody has their opinion. It's not like I can go out and do a 360 windmill and, you know, drive down the lane and dunk on somebody. So for me, like, I'm never gonna fight three-point shots." Curry emphasized that his view of the game has always included three-point shooting as a fundamental strategy, acknowledging that different players bring varied skill sets to the league. He mentioned the growing prominence of talented big men dominating in the post, illustrating the diverse styles that teams employ as defenses adjust over time. Curry concluded, "I'm going to keep shooting threes, so don't worry about that."
The Golden State Warriors' success during their championship run between the 2014-15 and 2017-18 seasons has played a pivotal role in transforming the league's approach to three-point shooting. In particular, their record-setting 73-9 campaign in 2016 saw the Warriors lead the league with an average of 31.6 three-point attempts per game. This season, it is noteworthy that 29 out of 30 NBA teams are shooting at least 33 long-range shots each night. Curry, who holds the NBA record for most three-pointers made with 3,841, has consistently demonstrated his shooting prowess, ranking 12th in all-time three-point shooting percentage. In the current season, Curry has averaged 21.8 points and 6.6 assists per game while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 40.3 percent from beyond the arc. His determination to maintain his offensive style reflects his belief in the importance of the three-point shot in the modern game.
