Speculation Surrounds Offseason Moves as 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs Progress

As the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs continue, speculation is mounting regarding the offseason plans for teams that have been eliminated from the championship race. The Toronto Maple Leafs' recent exit from contention has sparked discussions about Mitch Marner potentially becoming the most prominent figure on this summer's free-agent market. Analysts are engaged in considerable speculation about where he might land if he officially enters free agency on July 1.
In addition to the focus on Marner, rumors are circulating concerning various players who could be on the move during this summer's trade market. One significant name that has emerged in discussions is Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram, whose skill set is expected to attract considerable interest across the league. With the NHL Draft set for June 27-28, attention is also shifting toward which prospects may be selected in the first round, while some teams remain open to trading their first-round picks for favorable returns. Reports indicate that the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks may be willing to part with their first-round selections. On May 20, The Athletic's Eric Stephens reported that Sharks GM Mike Grier was receptive to offers involving his pick if it would yield a player capable of providing immediate assistance to his roster. The potential for trades involving first-round picks is not limited to the Sharks and Canucks, as sources have suggested that the Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals may also entertain the notion of trading their picks.
On May 22, SI.com's Nick Horwat cited remarks from Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell, who communicated to Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writers that his team’s two first-rounders are available for the right offer. Waddell holds the 14th overall selection along with the Minnesota Wild’s 20th overall pick. Meanwhile, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News reported that Capitals GM Chris Patrick is also open to listening to offers for Washington's 27th overall pick. Patrick stated, 'I think you have to be open to all options.' Despite the willingness of these clubs to listen to offers, it is important to note that not every team will be inclined to make a trade.
