Seth Lugo to Stay with the Kansas City Royals: A Multi-Year Contract Extension

Speculation surrounding the potential trade of Seth Lugo from the Kansas City Royals has been put to rest, as the star ace is finalizing a multi-year contract extension to remain with the team. According to reports from ESPN's Jeff Passan, the extension will secure Lugo's presence in Kansas City for the upcoming years.
Anne Rogers of MLB.com has confirmed that the deal is a two-year contract with a vesting option for the 2028 season, while Jon Heyman of the New York Post has indicated that the extension is valued at approximately $46 million. This decision comes as Lugo, now 35 years old, is enjoying another exceptional season, posting a 2.95 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP across 19 starts, placing him on track for one of the standout campaigns of his career.
Despite Lugo's impressive individual performance, the Kansas City Royals have struggled, currently sitting four games back in the wild card race with a record of 52-54. This underperformance led to Lugo being a focal point in trade discussions, as reported by USA Today's Bob Nightengale, who noted that other teams were closely monitoring Lugo, believing he could be on the trading block if the Royals fell out of contention. Ultimately, the organization opted against a sell-off at the trade deadline, opting instead to extend Lugo's contract, allowing him to continue contributing to the team as they aim for a postseason push.
