Saquon Barkley recorded two significant career milestones on Sunday, surpassing the 2,000 rushing yards mark and securing an NFC East title. Following the Philadelphia Eagles' commanding 41-7 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, which clinched the division crown for the team, Barkley expressed his satisfaction, stating, 'I'm happy. It's my first hat and t-shirt game.' This victory marked a notable achievement for Barkley, as he had not won a division title during his first six seasons with the New York Giants, where he reached the playoffs just once.
After signing with the Eagles ahead of the 2024 season, Barkley's performance has been impressive, amassing 2,005 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, along with 33 catches for 278 yards and two additional scores, contributing significantly to the Eagles' strong record of 13-3. Barkley has now joined an exclusive group, becoming the ninth player in NFL history to reach the 2,000-yard milestone in a single season. He is also on the verge of breaking Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, needing just 101 more yards to surpass that mark.
However, the team's strategy regarding Week 18 remains uncertain, particularly since the Eagles may secure the No. 2 seed with nothing left to play for in the regular-season finale. To earn the top overall seed, the Eagles would require a victory over the Giants, alongside losses for both the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions this week, and a subsequent Vikings win against the Lions in Week 18. The Eagles, who last had a bye in Week 5, are likely to rest key players in Week 18 if they cannot contend for the top seed. Barkley indicated that he is not overly focused on breaking the record, stating, 'I'm not overtly trying to get it... we've got bigger things we're focused on.' His larger goal is to achieve success with the team, emphasizing his aspirations for Super Bowl victories.
