Projecting the Top Second Basemen for 2030: A Look Ahead

The Moneyline MLB 30 in '30 series examines projections for the best players at each position in the 2030 season, starting with second basemen. Predicting which players will excel at second base in the years ahead can be challenging, as many future stars are often shortstop prospects shifted due to positional depth. A notable example is Jackson Holliday, a former shortstop drafted for his exceptional skill set who has now transitioned to second base at the major league level.
In evaluating the potential of these players over the next five years, both offensive and defensive capabilities were considered. However, much of this ranking relies on subjective assessments and projections. Before diving into the top 30 second basemen, it is important to acknowledge current players who may age out of their prime or shift positions prior to the onset of the 2030 season. Notable veterans, such as Ozzie Albies, Jose Altuve, and Marcus Semien, were excluded from these rankings due to an anticipated decline influenced by age.
Starting the rankings, Termarr Johnson of the Pittsburgh Pirates, age 26 in 2030, features at number 30. Drafted fourth overall in 2022, Johnson has yet to fully manifest his promise in the minors but remains only 20 years old. Following him is Max Muncy of the Las Vegas Athletics, who after a modest beginning in the pros, demonstrated strong performance at Triple-A last season and has potential as an everyday player. Other players in the ranking include Juan Brito from the Cleveland Guardians, noted for his breakout season, and Nico Hoerner of the Chicago Cubs, recognized as an elite defensive second baseman.
