During the organization's "Amazin' Day" event, Mets owner Steve Cohen expressed dissatisfaction with the structure of the offer presented by Alonso's camp, suggesting that the terms might not align with the team's expectations.

In response to Cohen's remarks, Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, defended the proposed contract structure, asserting that it adheres to established fairness standards within the league. Boras emphasized that the request made by Alonso for a free-agent contract is consistent with the standards and practices that other clubs have employed when signing players of similar caliber, particularly those who have received qualifying offers and have been recognized as All-Stars.

Alonso, a four-time All-Star, has had a notable performance, hitting .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs in the 2024 season. His contributions helped guide the Mets to the National League Championship Series, and he has been an integral member of the team's lineup since making his debut in 2019. In addition to negotiations with the Mets, Alonso's free agency has garnered interest from other teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays.
