Pete Alonso Signs Two-Year Contract with New York Mets

Veteran slugger Pete Alonso has reportedly come to an agreement with the New York Mets on a two-year, $54 million contract that will keep him in the Flushing area through the 2026 season. The deal, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, includes a $10 million signing bonus.
Will Sammon from The Athletic provided further insight, noting that the agreement does not involve any deferred money. According to Heyman, Alonso opted for the two-year term over a competing offer from the Mets, which was a three-year contract worth $71 million. This announcement arrives unexpectedly following the Mets' acquisition of Juan Soto, who signed a record-breaking $765 million contract earlier in the free agency period. Alonso had also been connected to various trade discussions throughout the season but expressed a desire to finish his career with the Mets after the 2023 campaign, stating, 'I love it here.'
Despite experiencing a downturn in performance during the 2023 season—posting a .217 batting average with a .318 on-base percentage, 46 home runs, and 118 RBIs—Alonso remained a central figure within the club. His trade rumors persisted even into the 2024 season, where he recorded a .240 batting average, .329 on-base percentage, 34 home runs, and 88 RBIs, aiding the Mets in securing a playoff berth for the second time since 2017 and advancing to the NL Championship Series for the first time since 2015. Alonso’s consistent track record likely reassured the Mets about retaining him for years to come, as he is set to continue leading a lineup that now features Soto, along with established talents Francisco Lindor, Brett Baty, Starling Marte, and the promising Francisco Álvarez.
