Paul DePodesta Leaves Browns to Lead Rockies' Baseball Operations

Paul DePodesta's New Adventure in Colorado
Cleveland Browns chief strategy officer Paul DePodesta is reportedly making a significant career shift by accepting the position of head of baseball operations for the Colorado Rockies, according to sources Ken Rosenthal, Zac Jackson, and Brittany Ghiroli from The Athletic. DePodesta has been with the Browns since January 2016, a period during which the team has recorded a challenging overall record of 56-99-1, with two playoff appearances and only one postseason win.
From Football to Baseball: A Journey Through DePodesta's Career
Before his tenure in the NFL, DePodesta had a robust career in Major League Baseball. He originally worked for the Cleveland Indians from 1996 to 1998 before moving to the Oakland Athletics as assistant general manager in 1999. DePodesta is well-known for his association with the A's during a transformative period that Michael Lewis documented in his book 'Moneyball,' which later inspired the Academy Award-nominated film. Following his success with the A's, he became the general manager for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2004, holding that position for two seasons before moving on to roles with the San Diego Padres and New York Mets.
DePodesta is stepping into a Rockies organization that has faced significant challenges in recent years, marked by seven consecutive losing seasons and a troubling record of 43-119 in 2025. The Rockies have struggled particularly in recent seasons, suffering at least 101 losses in each of the past three years. Taking charge of this franchise will be a daunting task for DePodesta, especially with strong competitors in the NL West, including the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and the playoff-competitive San Diego Padres. With his extensive experience, DePodesta aims to rejuvenate the Rockies and move them up from the bottom of the division.
