Positive Progress for Chargers' Rookie Running Back
The Los Angeles Chargers are breathing a sigh of relief as rookie running back Omarion Hampton takes a significant step towards returning from an ankle injury that has kept him out since Week 5. According to ESPN's Kris Rhim, the team has officially opened a 21-day practice window for Hampton, setting a crucial timeline for his return.
During his brief stint this season, Hampton showcased his potential with 66 carries, amassing 314 rushing yards and scoring two touchdowns in just five starts. However, his promising season took a hit during a loss to the Washington Commanders on October 5 when he sustained an ankle injury that led to him being placed on injured reserve.
Initially, head coach Jim Harbaugh indicated that Hampton's path back might not open until after the Week 12 bye. However, positive progress this week prompted the coaching staff to activate his practice window ahead of Week 13. “Just gonna really ramp up... but good to get him back out there,” said Harbaugh, indicating optimism about Hampton's return.
In addition to Hampton, the Chargers also opened the practice window for defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia, who has been recovering from an elbow injury since Week 7. The timing is crucial for the Chargers, who are primed to return to action this Sunday with a home matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Chargers have faced challenges this season with limited running back depth after losing both Hampton and Najee Harris, who suffered a season-ending Achilles tear. In their absence, Kimani Vidal has stepped up, leading the backfield with 87 carries for 386 yards and two touchdowns. Despite Hampton's imminent return, Harbaugh noted the team would assess Vidal's role in upcoming games, suggesting the potential for a split in carries.
Looking Ahead
As the Chargers prepare for their upcoming games, including a visit from the Philadelphia Eagles on December 8 and a road matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on December 14, the return of Hampton could be a pivotal boost as they navigate the challenges of the remaining season.
