NHL Trade Buzz: Key Players to Monitor Ahead of the Draft

As June approaches, attention in the hockey community is focused squarely on the Stanley Cup Final rematch between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers. With the playoffs concluding later this month, teams are starting to pivot towards offseason activities, including preparations for the 2025 NHL Draft, scheduled to take place in Los Angeles from June 27 to 28. Although the trade market has been relatively quiet since the March 8 trade deadline, it is anticipated to heat up as franchises seek to strengthen their rosters for the upcoming season and beyond. Much of the trading activity may arise in the days leading up to the draft weekend.
Trade speculation has intensified as the postseason has unfolded, with several notable NHL players emerging in discussions. Among those featured in recent rumors are Chris Kreider of the New York Rangers and Erik Karlsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins, both of whom were previously included on the May NHL Trade Block Big Board. New names have also surfaced, including Jonathan Marchessault of the Nashville Predators and JJ Peterka of the Buffalo Sabres. Conversely, seven players from the May list—including Elias Pettersson and Thatcher Demko of Vancouver, Mike Zibanejad of the New York Rangers, Joonas Korpisalo of Boston, Matias Maccelli of Utah, and Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anders Lee of the New York Islanders—have been removed due to their limited involvement in trade discussions throughout the month.
New York Rangers' winger Chris Kreider remains a focal point for trade analysts. The 34-year-old has been frequently mentioned in media trade chatter and was noted in a memo from Rangers general manager Chris Drury concerning players who might be available. While Kreider's recent injuries may have dampened immediate interest, his goal-scoring capability and experience could make him a valuable asset for teams looking to enhance their offensive output.
Meanwhile, Erik Karlsson, a seasoned defenseman also among the top trade candidates entering June, continues to be a significant focal point. Acquired by the Penguins in August 2023, the three-time James Norris Trophy winner has displayed inconsistent defensive play, prompting speculation regarding his future with the rebuilding franchise. Despite his substantial cap hit of $11.5 million, Karlsson could attract interest from clubs seeking an experienced puck-moving defenseman, especially if the Penguins are willing to retain a portion of his salary.
On the other hand, Jonathan Marchessault's situation with Nashville has drawn attention. After joining the Predators seeking a boost in offensive production, Marchessault's performance did not meet expectations, leading to a potential reassessment of his fit with the team. His declining numbers could make him a potential target for teams looking for veteran experience at a discount.
As for JJ Peterka, the young winger has blossomed into a core player for the Buffalo Sabres and is now reportedly garnering interest from multiple teams. Having recorded a career-high 68 points this season, his restricted free agency status keeps his future uncertain, with the Sabres possibly facing tough decisions regarding his contract negotiations. Given their favorable cap situation, they may still entertain trade inquiries if negotiations become complicated.
The New York Rangers may also be considering the future of Alexis Lafrenière, the first overall pick from the 2020 NHL Draft. Despite signing a seven-year extension last October, his production this past season has led to speculation about his availability in the trade market. With new head coach Mike Sullivan at the helm, the team may choose to retain Lafrenière to see if he can rediscover his previous form.
Similarly, Bryan Rust of the Pittsburgh Penguins, another former linemate of Sidney Crosby, is generating chatter. Teams have reportedly inquired about his availability as his no-movement clause approaches its expiration date this summer. While his long-standing role on the team could make him a valuable asset, the Penguins’ rebuilding plan may lead to reconsiderations.
The St. Louis Blues are also evaluating their roster following an early playoff exit, specifically regarding the future of Jordan Kyrou. With a no-trade clause coming into effect soon, Kyrou's strong goal-scoring ability makes him an intriguing option in the trade market, particularly for teams looking to bolster their offensive lineup.
The Tampa Bay Lightning find themselves in a delicate situation with Isaac Howard, who has expressed uncertainty about his future with the club. After an impressive collegiate career, the young winger has yet to secure a contract, possibly leading to him being placed on the trade block if a resolution cannot be reached. His skills are likely to attract interest from franchises in rebuilding phases.
Among other players, Owen Tippett of the Philadelphia Flyers may also emerge as a trade chip as the team addresses its center depth issues. His proven scoring ability coupled with his signed contract could make him a candidate for trade discussions should the Flyers seek to acquire a top-tier center for their roster.
K'Andre Miller’s trade speculation continues to evolve as the 25-year-old defenseman becomes a restricted free agent soon. The Rangers are reportedly assessing his market value while contemplating how his potential trade could align with their roster reconfiguration for the future.
Lastly, the Calgary Flames are working toward a contract extension with Rasmus Andersson. His pending status as a free agent could lead to a series of decisions that might impact his tenure with the team and the broader team dynamics moving forward. If an extension is not reached, the Flames may look to trade him amidst fears of losing a core player during the upcoming offseason.
With numerous player evaluations being conducted and the NHL Draft on the horizon, the coming weeks will provide insight into which players will be on the move and how teams intend to reshape their squads as they prepare for the next season.
