NHL Free Agency: Current Landscape and Predictions

As the NHL free agency period that began in early July continues to unfold, the market remains ripe with drama and intrigue. While top stars such as Brock Boeser, Vladislav Gavrikov, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Mikael Granlund were swiftly signed, a notable number of quality unrestricted free agents are still available. Additionally, the restricted free agent market began to gain traction last week. As the free agency nears the three-week mark, several prominent names linger unsigned, and the next moves could significantly impact the teams involved.
One of the standout players still available is center Jack Roslovic, who concluded a solid regular season with the Carolina Hurricanes. At 28 years old, Roslovic recorded a career high of 39 points, including 22 goals in 81 games. Although he found himself out of the rotation during the playoffs, his regular season performance makes him arguably the top free agent left on the market. Following a one-year contract, Roslovic is likely seeking more long-term stability, which could explain his current status as an unsigned player. Reports from Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman indicate that the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown interest in acquiring Roslovic. Additionally, after trading Dakota Joshua and creating extra cap space, the Vancouver Canucks may also pursue him. Notably, talks between Vancouver and Roslovic's camp have been reported by Rick Dhaliwal of CHEK and The Athletic. With a second chance to add Roslovic this offseason, the Canucks could potentially secure his services in the coming days.
Another name worth mentioning is defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who recently completed a one-year stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The 5'10", 180-pound Grzelcyk has proven to be a fierce competitor, finishing the season with a career-best 40 points and establishing himself as a key power-play contributor. Although trade rumors surrounded him before the deadline, Grzelcyk remained with the Penguins but is now poised to explore new opportunities as a free agent. According to Luke Fox from Sportsnet, the Penguins appear to be shifting their focus after signing Parker Wotherspoon and Caleb Jones. Despite potential concerns regarding Grzelcyk's size, he remains a valuable depth addition for any contending team. The Colorado Avalanche could utilize his skills effectively behind established players such as Devon Toews and Sam Girard. Furthermore, a return to the Boston Bruins, where he spent the first eight seasons of his career, may be the most logical move for Grzelcyk.
In the goalie market, it has been noted that quality options are dwindling, and Ilya Samsonov remains one of the more recognizable names available. Following a solid 16-9-4 record with the Vegas Golden Knights, Samsonov is exploring his options after joining the team on a one-year deal. Despite a decent overall performance, his play diminished towards the end of the season, resulting in no playoff appearances. Reports suggest that Samsonov may need to adjust his asking price to generate interest. As backup value is still evident, the Pittsburgh Penguins might consider his veteran experience behind Joel Blomqvist, while the Calgary Flames could be interested in bolstering their depth with Samsonov alongside Dustin Wolf. The Edmonton Oilers are also a possibility, although they appear to be prioritizing trade options first. With potential interest from several teams, it is not surprising if Samsonov takes his time to find a fitting situation.
