NFL Offseason Roster Cuts Approach
As the NFL offseason enters a critical phase, teams are gearing up for the daunting task of trimming their rosters to the mandated 53 players by August 30. This annual rite of passage not only alters the landscape of careers for many players but can also reshape entire teams. While most depth charts are taking form, crucial roster spots remain in contention, particularly for players on the proverbial bubble. With the season drawing near, it’s time to analyze potential cut candidates from all 32 franchises.
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals faced a pressing dilemma in their running back room following the signings of Tyler Allgeier and the drafting of Jeremiyah Love with the third overall pick. While James Conner seems secure after restructuring his contract, Trey Benson’s prospects are uncertain. An injury-plagued offseason has hampered Benson's bid to make the final roster. With a solid trio at the position, it appears Bam Knight may claim the fourth spot, leaving Benson on the outside looking in.
Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons made significant changes to their inside linebacker group this offseason, adding players like Christian Harris and Channing Tindall while parting ways with Troy Andersen. JD Bertrand's future may be hanging by a thread despite his special teams contributions due to a lack of production and strong competition from rookies. He’ll need to showcase his value in preseason to avoid being cut.
Baltimore Ravens
In Baltimore, the focus is on developing a capable backup for star running back Derrick Henry. With the addition of Justice Hill, the Ravens are keen to solidify their backfield. However, with limited space for tailbacks, it’s likely that players like J.K. Dobbins or even “Ali” may face cuts if the roster shakes out unfavorably.
Buffalo Bills
The Buffalo Bills have retooled their offensive line by acquiring Austin Corbett and Lloyd Cushenberry and selecting Ar'maj Reed-Adams. Corbett’s versatility could solidify his role on the team, while veterans like Cushenberry may find themselves on the chopping block due to Corbett’s edge in the competition.
Carolina Panthers
After losing a promising rookie in Chris Brazzell II, the Carolina Panthers still boast a competitive wide receiver group. The futures of Jimmy Horn Jr. and John Metchie III are intertwined, as Metchie’s return could jeopardize Horn’s chances of making the final 53-man roster.
Chicago Bears
Chicago's Kiran Amegadjie has struggled to find playing time and with Jedrick Wills Jr.'s addition, his chances of survival are slim. The Bears' decisions regarding their tackle depth could hinge on performance in preseason games.
Cincinnati Bengals
As the Bengals recreate their tight end room, Tanner Hudson may not make the cut amid fierce competition from Erick All Jr. and Mike Gesicki, both of whom are expected to solidify their spots on the roster. Hudson’s age and lack of standout skills may lead to his early exit from the team.
Cleveland Browns
In Cleveland, the battle for the backup quarterback position could yield surprising results as Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders vie for starter status. Dillon Gabriel seems at risk of being the odd man out as he attempts to manage a disappointing performance history.
Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys have significant depth at outside linebacker, but players like Marist Liufau and James Houston need strong showings to secure their spots. Houston’s recent sack production could give him an advantage over Liufau, who might find himself cut if he doesn't excel.
Denver Broncos
With J.K. Dobbins re-signed, the Denver Broncos’ running back group looks strong. Jaleel McLaughlin and Tyler Badie may battle for the last spot, emphasizing contributions on special teams which may tip the scales in favor of Badie.
Detroit Lions
The Lions face uncertainty surrounding Roger McCreary, as the defensive back struggles to seize a meaningful role. His inconsistent training camp performance could cost him a place on the roster.
Green Bay Packers
Green Bay's added depth at cornerback puts Carrington Valentine’s role in jeopardy. With added competition and missed training camp time, he may become expendable.
Houston Texans
With the signing of Foster Moreau, Cade Stover’s position looks precarious. Once a key player, his status has diminished now that the Texans have upgraded their tight end corps.
Indianapolis Colts
Jaylon Jones might be on his way out as the Colts reshape their cornerback depth chart. Setbacks and the influx of talent could lead to his removal from the roster.
Jacksonville Jaguars
After investing in backups like Hunter Long, the Jaguars face decisions on position depth that could see Long sidelined if the younger players impress.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs’ depth chart is evolving, allowing new faces to take pivotal roles. Kristian Fulton’s status rests on his ability to recover and make an impact, or risk being cut as a cost-saving measure.
Las Vegas Raiders
Jordan Meredith's position has weakened in light of the Raiders’ recent additions, and he may find himself cut as the team pivots toward a youth movement.
Miami Dolphins
With a restructured linebacker corps, Tyrel Dodson's stellar season might place him at risk, depending on how the new coaching staff views him within their system.
Minnesota Vikings
Ivan Pace Jr. is likely on the cutting block, as his snap counts have dwindled. New signings place him in an even tighter competition leading into the final cuts.
New England Patriots
Kayshon Boutte and Efton Chism III are on the verge of cuts due to an overloaded wide receiver lineup. New additions further limit their chances of survival.
New Orleans Saints
Kendre Miller’s past injuries have hampered his career, and with the addition of others like Travis Etienne Jr., his time in New Orleans may be running out.
New York Giants
Jalin Hyatt’s inconsistent performance leaves him vulnerable as the Giants reshuffle their receiver corps. If he doesn’t find his niche quickly, he may be looking for a new team.
New York Jets
Mazi Smith’s performance has been disappointing since he was traded to the Jets. Following offseason changes, he may be on thin ice ahead of cut day.
Philadelphia Eagles
With new signings in the cornerback room, Thomas Booker IV's position looks uncertain as he faces stiff competition for a limited number of roster spots.
Pittsburgh Steelers
Malik Harrison's odds of making the cut may dwindle as the team's linebacker situation evolves. His history may lead to a search for opportunities elsewhere.
San Francisco 49ers
In a busy offseason, Jacob Cowing's place in the 49ers’ receiver group may be at risk as younger players vie for limited spots.
Seattle Seahawks
Chris Paul Jr. faces an uphill struggle to secure a place on the Seahawks roster, with significant competition ahead.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Payne Durham’s place may be in jeopardy with an influx of younger talent pushing for tight end roles, especially if they can seize opportunities in the upcoming preseason.
Tennessee Titans
Will Levis's future with the Titans hangs in the balance amid concerns over his turnover history, possibly leading to his release as it becomes clearer that the team's focus is on other backups.
Washington Commanders
With the addition of Rachaad White, Jerome Ford's prospects may have dimmed significantly, leaving his chances to make the final roster in jeopardy.
This time of year in the NFL is always filled with tension and anticipation as players brace for the inevitable cuts. Teams are making tough decisions about who will don their uniforms in the upcoming season. With just weeks to go, every practice, scrimmage, and preseason performance counts as players battle for their professional lives in a league known for its ruthlessness.
