New York Mets Explore Potential Trade for Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
As the New York Mets prepare for the 2025 season, the team is actively seeking a solution for their first base position, particularly with Pete Alonso set to explore free agency. Recent reports indicate that the Mets have reached out to the Toronto Blue Jays to inquire about the availability of star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. According to Andy Martino from Moneyline, the communication between the two teams was characterized as 'checking in' on Guerrero's status within the organization.
The Mets have already made headlines this offseason by securing Juan Soto with a monumental 15-year, $765 million contract. The potential addition of Guerrero could further enhance the positive momentum surrounding the franchise as they approach the upcoming season. However, it remains unclear whether the Blue Jays are actively looking to trade the four-time All-Star at this time. Guerrero's future with Toronto continues to be a topic of speculation, particularly regarding his contract situation. He recently avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year deal worth $28.5 million for 2025, marking the final year of his team control before he becomes a free agent next offseason.
In December, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported that the Blue Jays and Guerrero were engaged in discussions about a long-term contract extension, and the one-year agreement does not preclude further negotiations. Observers within Major League Baseball have noted that the Blue Jays are eager to make a significant move, as they previously made strong bids for top talents such as Soto and Shohei Ohtani in the last two offseasons. Furthermore, Toronto is reportedly among the finalists for young pitcher Rōki Sasaki, competing with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. Should the Blue Jays experience another disappointing season in 2025 after finishing 74-88 last year, they might contemplate trading Guerrero ahead of the deadline if a long-term agreement cannot be reached by the middle of the season. Last season, Guerrero finished sixth in the American League MVP voting, boasting an impressive .323 batting average with a .396 on-base percentage and .544 slugging percentage, alongside 30 home runs and 103 RBIs in 159 games. According to Martino, the Mets are currently maintaining a firm stance on their offer to Alonso, which includes an opt-out clause after the first year; however, the specifics of their financial proposal remain undisclosed. At present, the Mets are expected to commence the season with Mark Vientos at first base and Brett Baty at third base, although the possibility of re-signing Alonso or acquiring Guerrero would allow for Vientos to shift back to third base.
