Netflix Expands Its NFL Streaming Offerings with Future Games

During the 2024 season, NFL games were broadcast on Netflix for the first time, marking a significant milestone for the streaming platform. Following this initial foray, Netflix is set to feature a doubleheader of NFL games on Christmas Day in 2025, indicating a possible expansion of its partnership with the league.
In a recent conversation on The Town with Matthew Belloni, CNBC's Alex Sherman shared insights from his discussion with Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos. Sherman reported that Sarandos expressed interest in acquiring additional NFL games beyond the two slated for Christmas Day. "I spoke to Ted Sarandos. He admitted to me, like, 'Yeah, I talked to Roger Goodell on the side about adding even more games beyond our two Christmas games.' We just need to figure out a way to eventize these games," Sherman noted, suggesting the possibility of a package of 15 games that the NFL might negotiate with Netflix to enhance viewership.
The inaugural Christmas Day games on Netflix featured high-profile matchups, including the Kansas City Chiefs, led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, facing off against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Baltimore Ravens also emerged victorious over the Houston Texans, punctuated by a halftime performance from Beyoncé in her hometown of Houston. According to a press release from Netflix, these events became the two most-streamed NFL games in U.S. history. The upcoming Christmas Day doubleheader will showcase the Dallas Cowboys battling the Washington Commanders at 1 p.m. ET, followed by a contest between the Detroit Lions and the Minnesota Vikings at 4:30 p.m. ET. As playoffs approach, these games could have significant implications for the NFC East and NFC North divisions, where only the Cowboys failed to qualify for the postseason last year. The Cowboys, often referred to as 'America's Team,' are anticipated to draw a large audience, even amid expectations surrounding players such as Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens. With an increasing number of NFL broadcasts available on various streaming platforms, including Thursday games on Prime Video and playoff games on Peacock, Netflix's desire to expand its offerings signifies a trend toward greater accessibility for NFL fans.
