MLB Commissioner Optimistic About Player Participation in 2028 LA Olympics

MLB Eyes Olympic Future for Players
In an encouraging development for baseball fans, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed optimism on Saturday regarding the potential participation of Major League players in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Speaking ahead of Game 2 of the 2025 World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays, Manfred stated, "I am positive about it. I think that the owners have kind of crossed the line in terms of, we'd like to do it if we can possibly make it work."
Challenges and Progress Toward Inclusion
While Manfred acknowledged the excitement around this possibility, he also noted that there are logistical issues that still need attention. Historical context reveals that MLB has not allowed players on 40-man rosters to compete in any of the previous six Olympic inclusions of baseball. The most recent missed opportunity came during the Tokyo 2021 Olympics when MLB ultimately decided against allowing player participation after the event was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, despite initial expectations for change.
The upcoming Los Angeles Olympics from July 15-20, 2028, offers a unique chance for the league to showcase its top talents. Manfred has indicated that he plans to work with team owners and the players' union to navigate the calendar implications of holding the All-Star Game while also accommodating Olympic commitments. He's confident that an arrangement could allow players to compete without jeopardizing the regular MLB season.
Manfred's discussions with the players' union have been positive, with MLBPA executive director Tony Clark noting in July that players are eager to find a solution for Olympics participation. Given that baseball was not included in the 2024 Paris Olympics schedule, the LA 2028 Games might be MLB's best opportunity for Olympic exposure in the near future, especially with uncertainty surrounding the sport's status in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics.
As dialogues continue, the outlook for a vibrant display of MLB talent at the 2028 Olympics remains a priority for both the league and its players.
