MLB Power Rankings Update Post Trade Deadline

After one of the busiest trade deadline days in recent memory, MLB teams are poised for an interesting final two months of the season. This week's power rankings mark the first analysis since the buyers and sellers were clearly delineated. Organizations like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets boast considerable talent and high payrolls; however, no team has emerged as a definitive frontrunner this season, highlighted by the fact that 10 different teams have held the top position in the weekly rankings so far.
The evaluations in this week's power rankings consider both recent performances and the actions taken by each team during the trade deadline. As such, it is not unusual for a team to drop in the rankings despite performing well, or for a team to rise even after struggling in a series. A total of 19 teams have been categorized as buyers or sellers this year, with the postseason field limited to just 12 teams, indicating that much remains uncertain as the playoff race continues to unfold.
The Colorado Rockies find themselves at the bottom of the rankings, holding a record of 30-81, after a week that saw them lose two out of three games against the Cleveland Guardians and win two out of three against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Rockies have typically stayed passive at the trade deadline but made strides this season by embracing a seller’s role, trading away Ryan McMahon’s contract and sending relievers Jake Bird and Tyler Kinley to other teams in exchange for prospects. Although the team requires a more comprehensive rebuild, this development signifies a move towards adequacy for the future.
