Mika Zibanejad Makes History with First Winter Classic Hat Trick in Rangers' 5-1 Victory

Mika Zibanejad Leads Rangers to Winter Classic Glory
Mika Zibanejad delivered a historic performance for the New York Rangers during the 2026 NHL Winter Classic held at the Miami Marlins' loanDepot Park, helping his team to a commanding 5-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. The standout center made headlines by scoring the first Winter Classic hat trick and only the third in NHL outdoor game history, earning him the coveted Cocoa Cup as the game’s MVP.
Zibanejad set the tone early by scoring on a first-period power play, which not only opened the scoring for the Rangers but also tied the franchise record for the most power play goals at 116, previously held by Chris Kreider and Camille Henry. His offensive prowess didn’t stop there; he assisted on two goals from teammate Artemi Panarin and netted another goal of his own, bringing him to a tie for the NHL record for most points in a single outdoor game.
Completing his hat trick, Zibanejad sealed the win by firing an empty-net goal from his own zone during the third period, marking him as the first NHL player to achieve five points in an outdoor game. This outing was particularly special as it was his first five-point game since 2021. Meanwhile, Artemi Panarin also shone, bringing his total to seven points in outdoor games, tying him with NHL legends Henrik Zetterberg, Jonathan Toews, and James van Riemsdyk for the most all-time.
Other notable performances included Alexis Lafreniere with three assists and Vincent Trocheck contributing two assists, all while fans applauded the Rangers' stars after a tumultuous first half of the season. The Panthers managed to score one goal through Sam Reinhart on a late power play, although another effort by Reinhart was disallowed after the officials ruled the puck had been kicked in.
As of now, both the Panthers (21-16-3) and Rangers (20-18-5) sit with 45 points, just outside the Wild Card bubble in the Eastern Conference, as they continue their quest for playoff positioning.
