Mets Trade Nimmo to Rangers for Semien in Major Offseason Move

Mets Make Bold Move by Acquiring Semien
The New York Mets kicked off their offseason with a significant trade on Sunday, sending outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers in exchange for second baseman Marcus Semien. This move marks a crucial step for the Mets as they look to bolster their roster ahead of the upcoming season.
Mets president David Stearns addressed the reasoning behind the trade, stating, "a recognition that what we did last year wasn't good enough, and running back the exact same group wasn't the right thing to do." The team is determined to make necessary adjustments following a disappointing season in which they failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Brandon Nimmo, a homegrown talent, was drafted by the Mets with the 13th overall pick in the 2011 MLB draft. In 2025, he recorded impressive career highs with 25 home runs and 92 RBIs, solidifying his place as a fan favorite and key contributor to the team.
In return, the Mets received Marcus Semien, a three-time All-Star known for his versatility on the field. Although Semien played a crucial role in the Rangers' 2023 World Series victory, he faced challenges this past season, appearing in only 127 games due to an injury sustained on August 20. He concluded the season with a batting average of .230, 15 home runs, and 62 RBIs.
Stearns expressed optimism regarding Semien's potential impact, emphasizing that his contributions to winning baseball extend beyond just offensive statistics. "I think there's still some underlying aspects of what he does that are encouraging for us offensively," Stearns noted. The Mets are optimistic that Semien will play a pivotal role in their pursuit of a World Series title in 2026.
