Mets Continue Offseason Overhaul, Trading Jeff McNeil to Athletics

New York Mets Make Major Moves in Offseason
The New York Mets have been one of the most active teams this winter, continuing their offseason fire sale on Monday with the trade of second baseman Jeff McNeil to the Oakland Athletics. This move further indicates the team's commitment to reshaping its roster.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, McNeil's departure marks yet another chapter in the Mets' offseason, where they have seen several key players leave. Alongside McNeil, outfielder Brandon Nimmo was traded to the Texas Rangers, and star first baseman Pete Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles in free agency. Additionally, the Mets lost their star closer, Edwin Diaz, who signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
To address the losses, the Mets have made some strategic signings, including versatile infielder Jorge Polanco, who joined the team with a two-year, $40 million contract. Polanco has experience at first, second, and third base, although he recently expressed that he expects to primarily play first base in 2026.
Despite the flurry of offseason moves already made, the Mets are expected to remain active in the trade market as they look to build a competitive roster capable of contending for the World Series. Currently, other potential trade targets include Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal, Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte, Chicago White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr., and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos.
Skubal is particularly notable as he is the first pitcher since former Mets ace Jacob deGrom to win back-to-back Cy Young Awards, and although Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris stated that Skubal is not “untouchable,” the Mets will need to weigh their options carefully as they seek impactful additions.
As the offseason progresses, fans will be watching closely to see how the Mets navigate this tumultuous period and whether they can turn their fortunes around after a disappointing finish to the 2025 season.
