The New York Mets made a remarkable journey to the 2024 National League Championship Series, culminating in a significant tribute to one of the season's defining symbols—the 'OMG' sign, which will be displayed in Cooperstown. Tim Healey from Moneyline reported the details on Tuesday.
This iconic sign, initially created by Mets fan and local artist Jerome McCroy, was gifted to the team during a transformative period in June and July. The original orange and blue 'OMG' sign became a treasured part of the team's culture, featured prominently in the dugout following home runs. The version now set for the Hall of Fame was crafted in September for the starting pitchers. It will be showcased as part of the Mets' section in the 'Your Team Today' exhibit, which features a locker display that encapsulates each major league team's narrative through artifacts from the past decade.
The original OMG sign will find a permanent place in the Mets' Hall of Fame, situated in center field at Citi Field. The term 'OMG' is linked to the popular single performed by Mets infielder José Iglesias, known as Candelita, which played during home runs and victories. After starting the season 11 games under .500 by June 2, the Mets embarked on an impressive streak, finishing the regular season 27 games above .500, ultimately securing a wild card spot on the season's final day. Their remarkable turnaround included a perfect record in extra-inning games and a triumphant defeat of the NL East-winning Philadelphia Phillies in four NLDS games, before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS. Iglesias played a pivotal role in this resurgence, posting a .337 batting average with an .830 OPS over 85 games, contributing significantly to the team's morale and chemistry. The OMG sign now stands as a representation of an unforgettable season for the Mets, earning its rightful place in history at the Hall of Fame.
