Matthew Tkachuk Weighs Surgery Decision Amid Stanley Cup Glory and Olympic Aspirations

Matthew Tkachuk Faces Offseason Decisions After Stanley Cup Triumph
Florida Panthers' superstar Matthew Tkachuk is at a crossroads this offseason, contemplating whether to undergo surgery to address injuries sustained during the team's remarkable run to the 2025 Stanley Cup Championship. In an exclusive interview with Bleacher Report, Tkachuk revealed that he has been managing a torn adductor muscle and a sports hernia, and described his decision as '50-50' regarding whether he will opt for surgery this summer.
“No updates yet, but I guess we're coming down to the wire if we do it or not,” Tkachuk stated, indicating that if he goes through with the procedure, he could miss the first two to three months of the upcoming 2025-26 season.
Championship Success and EA Sports Recognition
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his health, Tkachuk was recently spotted flaunting his skills at a photoshoot, celebrating his status as the cover athlete for EA Sports' NHL 26. The standard edition showcases him lifting the Stanley Cup, while the deluxe edition features a family affair with his brother Brady Tkachuk, captain of the Ottawa Senators, and their father, former NHL star Keith Tkachuk.
“All aspects of what's important to me in my professional life are captured in two covers,” Tkachuk remarked, highlighting the significance of these moments. He drew comparisons between his Panthers team and the three-time Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks of the early 2010s, saying, “I think we’re both one of, if not the best, teams of our little run there.”
EA Sports' NHL 26 is expected to make waves in the gaming world, featuring enhanced player data through NHL EDGE. “I hope they can show off my hands a little bit better than Brady’s,” Matthew joked, looking forward to the game's release on September 12, with early access for deluxe edition pre-orders beginning on September 5.
Looking Ahead to the 2025-26 Season and Olympics
As both Tkachuk brothers prepare for the future, Brady is navigating his own recovery process after injury setbacks at the end of the prior season. Returning to a strengthened Senators lineup, he expressed optimism about his health going into the new season. “Now, at this point, this is probably the best I've ever felt going into a season,” Brady noted.
In addition to their individual aspirations, the brothers are also focusing on representing Team USA in the upcoming 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics. They've joined a select group of NHL stars, including Jack Eichel and Auston Matthews, which Tkachuk sees as a step towards continuing their father's legacy of international success.
“You just collectively buy into an ultimate team that’ll do whatever for each other,” Matthew emphasized, reflecting on how crucial team cohesion will be in the Olympics. Both brothers are expected to share the experience with family, revealing their excitement for the Winter Games this February.
The Tkachuk brothers’ dedication to their teams and commitment to excellence is sure to keep fans eager as the new season approaches.
