Matthew Tkachuk Contemplates Offseason Surgery as Panthers Focus on Long-Term Health

Florida Panthers Star Matthew Tkachuk Weighs Surgery Options
Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk is currently undecided regarding offseason surgery that could keep him off the ice for at least the first two months of the 2025-26 NHL season. In an interview with ESPN's Greg Wyshynski, Tkachuk expressed uncertainty about his next steps, stating, "If I do get the surgery, it'll definitely be the first two or maybe three months if that's the case. But it's still undecided at this point."
Tkachuk played through significant injuries during the postseason, revealing that he sustained a torn adductor muscle and a sports hernia after the Panthers secured a championship victory against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. Initially labeled as a "lower-body" issue, his injuries first arose while competing for Team USA in February's 4 Nations Face-Off.
Despite these challenges, Tkachuk was able to return to practice in mid-April, just three days before the Panthers began their playoff run against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He made an immediate impact in Game 1, scoring two goals in under 12 minutes of ice time and went on to lead the team in playoff scoring with 23 points (eight goals, 15 assists) through 23 games.
Reflecting on his playoff journey, Tkachuk noted, "I wanted to throw in the towel a bunch of times... I really didn't think I would be playing, or at least playing to my capabilities, so the longer the playoffs went the better I felt." His determination played a key role in the Panthers' successful campaign, culminating in their championship win on June 17.
During the offseason, the Panthers have focused on maintaining their championship core, re-signing key players like Sam Bennett, Aaron Ekblad, and Brad Marchand. With Tkachuk's health a top priority, the Panthers seem likely to prioritize his long-term recovery over rushing him back to play for the upcoming season. Their strategy appears to be centered on ensuring he is at peak fitness come next spring, allowing for a strong run at a potential third consecutive championship.
