Matt Rempe Suspended for Eight Games Following Incident with Miro Heiskanen
The New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe has been suspended for eight games due to disciplinary actions stemming from an incident involving the Dallas Stars' Miro Heiskanen. The suspension was handed down following a third-period altercation, in which Rempe was penalized for both boarding and elbowing Heiskanen during the Rangers' 3-1 victory on Friday night.
An NHL Department of Player Safety hearing was conducted via Zoom on Sunday, during which officials noted that Rempe's actions 'violated multiple NHL rules.' Furthermore, the ruling clarified that, while Rempe has the right to appeal the suspension to NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and a neutral arbitrator, should the decision be upheld, he stands to forfeit approximately $80,000 in game checks. According to the Department of Player Safety, 'Rempe explodes upwards into a hard check into a defenseless Heiskanen while at the same time extending his elbow and forearm up and into the back of Heiskanen's neck, driving Heiskanen dangerously into the boards and glass.'
This suspension marks another significant disciplinary measure for Rempe, who has been classified as a repeat offender in the league. He previously received a four-game suspension last season for elbowing Jonas Siegenthaler of the New Jersey Devils, illustrating the NHL's stringent stance on repeat violations. During the recent game against Dallas, Rempe's actions earned him a major penalty and a game misconduct, leaving the Rangers to contend with a five-minute power play. Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette commented on the situation, stating, 'We killed the five, and we're moving on.' However, the Stars' players were quick to respond, as Roope Hintz engaged in a scuffle on the ice to defend Heiskanen. Hintz later expressed his concerns, stating, 'First, I wasn't sure did he get hurt or not, and then I saw that he was right there laying on the ice bleeding. Dirty, [from] behind, and he's obviously a big guy, so, yeah, just tried to go out there and do something.'
