Marc-André Fleury Returns to Penguins for Training Camp Ahead of 2025-26 Season

Welcome Back to Pittsburgh: Fleury Signs Tryout Contract
In a surprising turn of events, Marc-André Fleury is making a return to the ice just four months after announcing his retirement. The Pittsburgh Penguins officially announced on Friday that Fleury has signed a professional tryout contract in time for the upcoming 2025-26 training camp, set to begin on September 17.
Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas expressed the organization's excitement about Fleury's return, stating, "The entire Penguins organization is honored to welcome Marc-André Fleury back to the ice in Pittsburgh. This past year everyone witnessed how beloved and respected Marc is in the game of hockey, but the adoration goes beyond his accolades and career. Marc means so much to our team, our fans and the City of Pittsburgh because of the person he is and the example he set. The Penguins feel he and his family are most-deserving of this opportunity to celebrate this full-circle moment back where it all started in front of the black and gold faithful."
A Reflective Retirement and a Surprising Comeback
Fleury, who signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Wild for the 2024-25 season, initially revealed that it would be his final season in the NHL. The Wild's playoff journey ended on May 1 after a loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, with Fleury's last appearance coming in Game 5 where he made six saves in relief. Reflecting on his career, Fleury stated, "I still don’t know; it’s a little unbelievable that it's over. Twenty years went by so quick, right?" Although he seemed at peace with his career conclusion, his agent, Allan Walsh, revealed on a podcast that multiple teams had reached out with serious offers when free agency rolled around.
Despite initial hesitations, Fleury found a special connection to the Penguins, the team that drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick in 2003, where he enjoyed 13 successful seasons and won three Stanley Cup titles. His decision to come out of retirement for a chance at a fitting farewell in Pittsburgh has delighted fans and players alike.
Penguins' Goalie Situation Ahead of 2025-26 Season
As Fleury re-enters the fold, the Penguins face an uncertain situation in goal. Tristan Jarry is currently the No. 1 option, especially after the trade of Alex Nedeljkovic to the San Jose Sharks. Meanwhile, Artūrs Šilovs, who has limited NHL experience, is contending for the backup position. He posted a 3.65 goals-against average and an 86.1 save percentage last season. Additionally, Joel Blomqvist, a second-round draft pick in 2020, is also in the mix for the No. 2 spot after his performances with the Penguins last season.
