Luka Dončićs Win-Now Mindset as Lakers Prepare for Upcoming NBA Season

Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić has adopted a win-now mentality as he prepares for the 2025-26 NBA season. According to remarks made by ESPN's Dave McMenamin on NBA Today, an insider close to Dončić indicated that his focus is on immediate success rather than patience and long-term commitments. The expectation is clear: Dončić aims to contend for championships during his tenure with the Lakers, signifying a desire to raise banners at Crypto.com Arena.
Dončić is reportedly eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million contract extension this coming Saturday. Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints mentioned that Dončić is currently engaged in a Jordan Brand promotional tour and is anticipated to finalize this substantial extension upon his return to Los Angeles. Sources indicate that meetings with Lakers' general manager Rob Pelinka and team executives are planned to formalize the agreement.
The 26-year-old player, who has been open about his rigorous offseason training, recently featured on the cover of Men's Health. His commitment became even more evident following his midseason move from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers. In his brief time with the Lakers, Dončić contributed significantly to the team's 50-win season, helping secure the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference before their exit in the first round of the playoffs against the Minnesota Timberwolves. With past successes, including leading the Mavericks to the Western Conference title in 2024, Dončić's sights are firmly set on achieving a more favorable playoff outcome this time. The Lakers have bolstered their roster by adding center Deandre Ayton and guard Marcus Smart, while the core remains intact from the previous season. As Dončić aims to establish his legacy in Los Angeles, the Lakers appear poised to intensify competition in the West, facing formidable foes such as the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the revamped Houston Rockets.
