Luka Dončić Embraces Win-Now Mentality Ahead of NBA Season

Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić is approaching the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season with a win-now mentality, according to insights shared by ESPN's Dave McMenamin on NBA Today. A source close to Dončić recently conveyed that his focus is not on a long-term commitment but rather on immediate success. This mindset indicates Dončić's desire to be in a position to contend for championships while he is part of the Lakers organization.
Currently eligible to sign a four-year, $229 million contract extension, Dončić's progression in negotiations appears imminent. Reports from Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints suggest that Dončić is anticipated to meet with Lakers' executive Rob Pelinka upon his return to Los Angeles after concluding a tour with Jordan Brand, during which he is expected to finalize his extension. Dončić has also emphasized his fitness during the offseason, as illustrated by his feature in Men's Health, underscoring his commitment to peak performance.
Having arrived in Los Angeles in February after a notable trade from the Dallas Mavericks, Dončić contributed significantly to the Lakers' 50-win season and their position as the third seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Unfortunately, the team was eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening round. With aspirations for a deeper playoff run this season, the Lakers have bolstered their roster by acquiring center Deandre Ayton and adding depth to their guard position with Marcus Smart. The returning core includes four-time MVP LeBron James and rising star Austin Reaves. As the Lakers prepare for the upcoming competitive season, including challenges from teams like the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the revamped Houston Rockets, Dončić remains focused on making a significant impact in L.A.
