Luis Gil Set to Return to Yankees Rotation

Luis Gil is expected to make a significant impact for the New York Yankees this weekend as he is likely to return to the rotation. According to the Talkin' Yanks podcast, Yankees manager Aaron Boone indicated that Gil will throw 75 pitches during his rehab start in Triple-A on Tuesday. Should his performance be favorable, he is poised to start against the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Gil, who has yet to make his season debut this year, has been recovering from a high-grade lat strain sustained in May. In his recent rehab outing in Triple-A, he allowed four hits and five runs over the span of 3.1 innings, registering four strikeouts and three walks while throwing 67 pitches, 44 of which were strikes. The young pitcher, who was the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, concluded last season with a solid record of 15-7, a 3.50 ERA, and a 1.19 WHIP.
The Yankees' starting rotation has faced notable challenges due to injuries throughout the season. The difficulties began in the spring with star pitcher Gerrit Cole undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery. Furthermore, starter Clarke Schmidt has also recently undergone similar surgery. Despite these setbacks, the Yankees have managed to maintain a competitive position, currently holding second place in the AL East with a record of 57-49. The return of Gil to the mound could provide the team with the boost needed for a late-season resurgence following some recent struggles.
