Los Angeles Angels Eye Albert Pujols as Potential Manager Amid Uncertain Future

Rumors Swirl Around Angels' Managerial Choices
The Los Angeles Angels are considering outside-the-box options for their managerial position as Ron Washington's future with the team hangs in the balance. With speculation arising about Washington's health and his possible return, the Angels may look to turn to a familiar face in the organization.
Could Albert Pujols Take the Helm?
ESPN's Buster Olney has suggested that former superstar Albert Pujols could emerge as a potential candidate for the managerial role. Despite Pujols’ tenure with the Angels concluding on a rough note, his deep ties with the organization could warrant a second look. Pujols, who just recently transitioned from playing to managing the Dominican Republic team in the upcoming World Baseball Classic, has expressed interest in managing a major league club, stating, "If there’s any ballclub knocking on the door, I’d be open to hear that," indicating he is eager for an opportunity.
Other Notable Candidates
Another name being floated around by rival executives is former Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who might be more appealing to owner Arte Moreno than a lesser-known candidate. Since Scioscia stepped down in 2018, the Angels have seen a revolving door of managers, including Brad Ausmus, Joe Maddon, and Phil Nevin, with each bringing varying levels of success and challenges.
Washington's Health Issues
Washington, who underwent quadruple bypass heart surgery this season, has not managed a game since June 19 and will miss the rest of the year. While he aims for a comeback in 2026, the Angels are faced with the pressure of likely concluding their tenth consecutive losing season and missing the playoffs for the 11th year in a row.
Pujols' Legacy with the Angels
Pujols’ time with the Angels spanned from 2012 to 2021. In those ten seasons, he achieved a .256 batting average with 222 home runs and made one All-Star team. However, the end of his contract on a sour note after being released in 2021 due to previous tensions with Maddon over playing time could complicate a potential return.
As the Angels mull their future direction, the potential for a Pujols return conjures both excitement and caution amongst fans and executives alike.
