Lightning Halts Intense NFL Season Opener Between Cowboys and Eagles

Season Opener Interrupted by Storm
The highly anticipated 2025 NFL season opener between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles experienced an unexpected turn of events on Thursday night. The game, held at Lincoln Financial Field, was suspended in the third quarter due to lightning, with the Eagles leading 24-20 and 4:44 remaining in the quarter.
This incident marks the second straight year that the NFL season opener has been disrupted by weather. Last September, a lightning delay pushed back kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium during the Chiefs and Ravens matchup.
Game Highlights Before the Suspension
Before the game was suspended, the Eagles showcased their strengths. Defensive standout Jalen Carter faced an early ejection for an incident involving Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during an injury timeout, a surprising moment just six seconds into the first quarter. Despite the setback, the Cowboys opened the game with an impressive scoring drive.
The Eagles responded well, leading by one point at halftime after kicker Jake Elliott scored a remarkable 58-yard field goal on the first drive of the third quarter. Momentum continued to build for the Eagles as they recovered a fumble on the Cowboys' first possession of the half, setting up an opportunity to extend their lead when the game resumes.
Weather Cautions and Future Resumption
With safety as a priority, fans were advised to evacuate open seating areas and seek shelter under the concourses of the stadium, according to broadcasts during the delay. The current forecast indicated the possibility of isolated damaging wind gusts, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.
Per reports from NBC and NFL.com's Grant Gordon, the game is expected to resume no earlier than 11:30 p.m. ET, with the Eagles set to regain possession on the Cowboys' 10-yard line when play resumes.
