Liam Coen in Discussions with Jaguars Regarding Head Coaching Position
Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen has recently engaged in discussions with the Jacksonville Jaguars concerning the team's head coaching vacancy. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero indicated that Coen is viewed as a compelling candidate for the position. Despite informing the Jaguars on Wednesday that he would be remaining with the Buccaneers under a new contract, the Jaguars contacted him again following the firing of general manager Trent Baalke.
While Fox Sports' Greg Auman reported that Tampa Bay has not formally confirmed Coen's new contract, ESPN's Adam Schefter noted that the Buccaneers have struggled to establish contact with the coach. Schefter stated that the Buccaneers have made several attempts to reach Coen and his representation without success. Meanwhile, Coen is in Jacksonville for negotiations regarding the head coaching role. He has communicated his interest in interviewing for the position to Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles, indicating a deliberate move in light of the opportunity presented by the Jaguars.
There seems to be uncertainty surrounding Coen's commitment to Tampa Bay, with Rapoport suggesting that although there was a verbal agreement for an extension, the deal was never officially signed, resulting in a loss of communication between the two parties. The Jaguars previously interviewed Coen on January 15. Reports indicate that he is currently weighing his options, with Jacksonville reaching out several times, expecting him to decline multiple times. In the meantime, the Buccaneers have been operating under the assumption that Coen would continue as part of their coaching staff, following their substantial contract offer to retain him. Coen's renewed engagement with the Jaguars could potentially influence other candidates, as former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh is reportedly scheduled to interview with Jacksonville soon.
