Lakers' Austin Reaves Out for at Least a Month Due to Calf Injury

Injury Update: Austin Reaves to Miss Time
The Los Angeles Lakers are set to navigate the next month without guard Austin Reaves, who has been sidelined due to a calf injury. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, Reaves will be reevaluated in approximately four weeks following a diagnosis of a "grade 2 left gastrocnemius strain." This injury, affecting the calf muscle, follows a previous ailment that had already kept him off the court earlier this month.
Details of the Injury
Reaves initially left the Lakers' Christmas Day game against the Houston Rockets with what was described as left calf soreness. After undergoing an MRI, the severity of the injury became evident, as reported by The Athletic's Dan Woike. Prior to this, Reaves missed three games between December 10 and December 23 due to a "mild left calf strain." He had only just returned to action, playing 22 minutes off the bench in Tuesday's loss against the Phoenix Suns before starting again on Thursday.
Impact on the Team
The Lakers will feel Reaves' absence keenly, as he had become an integral part of their offensive efforts this season. Averaging 26.6 points per game with a shooting percentage of 50.7 from the field and 36.5 from three-point range, Reaves' contributions have been pivotal—especially in stretches where superstars Luka Dončić and LeBron James were not available. With the team currently sitting at 19-10 and ranked No. 4 in the Western Conference, the pressure now shifts even more onto Dončić and James to shoulder the scoring load.
Additionally, Marcus Smart, who started the second half in the recent game against the Rockets, may see an increased role as the Lakers look to adjust their backcourt in Reaves' absence. Losing Reaves for at least 14 games poses a challenge for the team as they strive to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
